Recover the readable pages of a damaged PDF into a new copy.

What to expect

The damaged file is rebuilt in an isolated process with memory and time limits, and you get a new copy; your upload is never changed. The result says whether recovery was complete, partial or impossible, and names any pages it had to leave out.

A page whose content is lost cannot be brought back, only left out. Encrypted PDFs need their password removed first.

What it does

Repair PDF rebuilds a PDF that will not open, opens with errors or shows blank pages because the file was cut short or damaged. It rebuilds the index a reader uses to find each part of the file, puts back a lost page list, and checks every page before keeping it. You get a new copy and a note saying whether recovery was complete, partial or impossible.

When to use it

Use it when a download stopped early, an email attachment arrives broken, or a program says a PDF is damaged and you have no other copy.

How to use Repair PDF

  1. Sign in with an account that has Premium access.
  2. Upload .pdf file. Each file can be up to 50 MB.
  3. Review the available settings and choose a 1, 7 or 30-day retention period, or Delete now to keep the result for just an hour.
  4. Start the job, then download and check the result before its retention period ends.

Before you start

A page whose content is lost cannot be brought back, only left out. Encrypted PDFs need their password removed first.

It recovers what is still in the file. A page whose content is missing is left out and named rather than guessed at. Password protected PDFs need the password removed first.

Processing limits

Up to 50 MB per input; one input per job. PDF limit: 2000 pages. Up to 2 active jobs per account. Output limit: 1000 MB. Renderer limits can reject especially large pages or images.

Example result

A delivery report cut off mid-download and missing its catalogue. Before, it will not open; after, both pages are back in a new copy.

Example details & evidence

Real PDF output from a synthetic file damaged on purpose: its catalogue was overwritten and it was cut off before its index. Before shows the reader's error, since there is no page to draw; after is page 1 of the repaired copy. Both pages came back, in the order they were stored.

Examples use synthetic files, not customer documents. Generation notes and SHA-256 hashes.

Common questions

Is my original file changed?

No. Repair always writes a new copy. The file you uploaded is only read.

What does partial recovery mean?

Some pages or parts of the file could not be read. The result lists the pages it left out, numbered as in the original, so you know what to find elsewhere.

Why was my file rejected?

Encrypted files need their password removed first, and files that need more memory or time than repair allows are stopped, which is also how files built to overload a reader behave.

Are scripts kept?

No. Document scripts and actions that run on opening are not carried over to the repaired copy. Links and form fields are kept where they survive.
